The sursingar developed in early 19th-century North India from the rabab. Ghulam Ali Khan and the Senia lineage (Tansen's descendants) developed its dhrupad repertoire. The instrument was considered prestigious for serious classical music.

The 20th century brought sharp decline as sarod and sitar dominated. Major practitioners died without adequate transmission. Bimal Mukherjee was among the last significant players. The instrument remains critically endangered today.

Construction

The sursingar is essentially a bass sarod—larger body, longer string length, heavier strings producing deep, resonant tones in the bass register.

Technique

Like the sarod, the sursingar employs a fretless metal fingerboard allowing continuous pitch slides (meend). The technique demands exceptional left-hand strength for the heavier strings.

Stylistic Association

The instrument was associated with the Senia lineage (Tansen's descendants) and the austere dhrupad-ang approach emphasising slow alap and controlled ornamentation.
