ଏହି ପାଠ୍ୟକ୍ରମ ବିଷୟରେ
The Kathak course online, prepared by KalaSudha, takes you from your first tatkar, the footwork, to a thirty-minute solo recital. Teachers based in India and abroad teach live online lessons worldwide, and you book them through KalaSudha on your teacher's calendar. The programme has three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. Beginners start at Foundation; returning dancers join after a placement against earlier milestones.
Your path in each module is 12 topics: eight core topics plus four open slots your teacher fills from electives, their own topics or both. The full path is 108 topics across nine modules. How long it takes depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs, because a topic closes only after your teacher reviews your evidence.
Nritta, the rhythmic dance, and abhinaya, the expressive dance, grow side by side. You recite bols in padhant, learn tukras, parans and tihais, and interpret stories and songs. The shared core prescribes no gharana; electives open the Jaipur, Lucknow, Banaras / Janakiprasad and Raigarh lines with material a practitioner approves.
Dancers learn from each other as well as from a teacher. You see how another dancer shapes the movement you are working on, and you perform for people who know what it takes. In a guru's class, students practise riyaz side by side, dance for one another and respond to the accompanist's bols. A cohort brings that into the course. The guided rehearsal and presentation that close every module become performances for the group, with partner and duet topics at each level.
One-to-one lessons are always available, and cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand. Teachers teach live in the language they set for the course. Workshops and summer camps come near you when enough learners sign up; to hear about workshops, register your interest on your city page by email or WhatsApp.
Each level leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. Register your interest to hear by email or WhatsApp when a cohort's dates and times are announced, or ask about one-to-one lessons in the Academy.

Your learning journey
The three Kathak levels
Each level has three modules and adds to your repertoire, your expressive work and your musical understanding. You start with posture, footwork and the cycle. You finish with original composition, supervised teaching and a recital.
-
Foundation
Prepare your space and alignment, then build clear tatkar, hastaks and a first expressive response. Learn a thaat, an opening greeting, an amad and three tukras, with a stepped turn. Then add a simple tihai, a gat nikas and a short abhinaya study. -
Intermediate
Develop tatkar density, movement quality and turn entries. Expand to six tukras across Teentaal and Jhaptal, with two parans and three tihais. Then develop gat bhav, interpret a song, compare four gharanas and present a fifteen-minute set. -
Advanced
Build twelve tukras across four cycles, four parans and six tihais into an extended nritta arc. Develop three expressive studies and source-based style analysis. Then compose original nritta, teach under supervision and give a thirty-minute recital.

What sets it apart
-
Nritta and abhinaya together
Footwork and compositions grow alongside expressive studies at every level, from a first feeling in gesture to developed narrative and song interpretation.
-
Feedback on your videos
Practice tasks ask for a full-body video with your feet audible and, for expression, your face visible. Your teacher reviews it against the topic's finishing criterion.
-
Gharana studies by choice
Compare Kathak traditions in the core. Electives in a chosen line open once a practitioner of that line approves the material.
-
Learn alongside others
Join a cohort when one opens, or learn one-to-one. In a cohort the rehearsal and presentation topics become performances for fellow dancers.
Prerequisites
- You need no previous dance experience to begin at Foundation.
- If you are returning after a break or trained elsewhere, a placement checks the earlier milestones.
- You need practice wear, a space your teacher approves and a camera view of your whole body.
- There is no minimum age: your teacher judges when a child is ready.
- Children learn through a parent's account, and a learner aged 13 or over can have their own login.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a structured online Kathak course with levels from beginner to advanced?
Yes. The Kathak course prepared by KalaSudha runs online in three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. You learn in live lessons with a teacher, one-to-one or in a cohort, and send full-body practice videos for feedback.
Each level leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. Ask about the course in the Academy.
Which Kathak gharana should a beginner choose to learn?
A beginner on the KalaSudha Kathak course does not need to choose a gharana first. The shared core prescribes no gharana's movement line, bols or compositions, and Intermediate compares four traditions by watching sourced examples.
Electives then open the Jaipur, Lucknow, Banaras / Janakiprasad and Raigarh lines with a teacher who teaches that material. You can complete every award without a specialisation.
Can a Kathak teacher correct my posture and footwork over video, and how should I practise between lessons?
Yes. In live online lessons your Kathak teacher watches your alignment, weight transfer and footwork, then sets the next correction. Between lessons you practise the task set for the current topic, reciting the bols before you dance them, and film it with your whole body in frame and your feet audible.
Your teacher reviews the video against the topic's finishing criterion. How long you practise is agreed with your teacher; you keep a record of what you actually do, and it is reviewed at the end of each module.
Should I learn Kathak in a group class or one-to-one?
One-to-one Kathak lessons are always available on the KalaSudha course, and you book as many lessons as a topic needs. Group cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand.
Register your interest to hear by email or WhatsApp when a batch's dates and times are announced. In a cohort you rehearse and present to the group, and your topics close on your own evidence.
How long does it take to learn Kathak?
How long it takes to learn Kathak on the KalaSudha course depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs. Your path has 12 topics in each of nine modules, and a topic closes only after your teacher reviews your evidence.
One-to-one learners book as many lessons as a topic needs, and repertoire work can carry a topic across several lessons.
How are students of online Indian classical music courses assessed?
On KalaSudha's online Indian classical music courses, teachers assess students topic by topic. Each topic credits named skills, and the teacher closes it only after reviewing the student's work. Foundation assessment uses practical work and spoken questions. Intermediate adds written theory, and Advanced adds theory papers and a judged stage performance. A module certificate follows each module, and KalaSudha issues an award at the end of each level.
