Raag Desh é um ícone cultural do subcontinente indiano. Pertencente ao Khamaj Thaat, é um raga "Chanchal" (brincalhão) e "Abhisarika" que captura a essência da paisagem indiana. Sua estrutura é simples, mas sua ressonância emocional é vasta, variando do fervor heroico do patriotismo ao terno anseio de uma noite chuvosa. 

Geralmente executado no segundo prahar da noite, Desh é frequentemente categorizado como um raga "Megh-Pradhan", cantado durante a estação das monções. Sua característica definidora é o uso duplo de Nishad: Shuddha Ni (N) na ascensão, que fornece uma sensação de esperança crescente, e Komal Ni (n) na descida, que evoca melancolia suave, semelhante à chuva. 

Desh vs. Khamaj vs. Sorat Dentro da família Khamaj Thaat, Desh ocupa um terreno intermediário único: 

  • Desh e Khamaj: Ambos usam o Nishad duplo. Khamaj é um raga Shadava-Sampurna que se inclina em Shuddha Ga (G). Desh frequentemente pula G na ascensão ou lhe dá menos peso, dando-lhe uma qualidade mais aberta e elevada.
  • Desh e Sorat são frequentemente confundidos. A diferença chave é o Gandhar (G). Em Sorat, G é estritamente evitado ou usado minimamente como uma nota de graça.
