About This Track
The jod is the bridge of an instrumental raga performance: the point where Deepak Shah gives Raag Yaman a steady inner pulse while the tabla stays silent. Phrases that drifted free in the alap now land on a beat, and Shah builds them into longer runs that circle the raga's vadi, the Gandhar, and its raised fourth. The pulse stays inside the melody itself, the way a sitar player would let the strokes of the right hand carry it.
This is the second of the album's three Yaman movements, the step between the unmetered alap and the full-speed jhala that follows. Ten minutes of gathering momentum, recorded live at the Kala Festival 2025 concert in Norwich.
