Raag Madhuvanti; Teen Taal

Deepak Shah is a Mumbai-based pianist and composer who has performed Hindustani classical ragas on the grand piano for over 25 years. Trained in a family musical lineage reaching back to his grandfather Shantilal Shah, he has built a recorded catalogue with T-Series, Tips, and Venus alongside more than 3,000 live performances.

Raag Madhuvanti is a late-afternoon raga from the Todi family. The word Madhu means honey, and the raga's character lives in that territory: Komal Gandhar and Teevra Madhyam create a sweetness cut with longing. The ascent reaches past Re and Dha before the descent returns through full, expressive glides.

This studio recording sets Madhuvanti in Teen Taal, the 16-beat cycle at the foundation of Hindustani classical performance. Teen Taal's even weight gives Shah room to develop the raga across the keyboard, moving through composed sections, improvised passages, and rhythmic interplay with the taal's pulse.
