ہولی ویل میوزک رومThe santoor's origins lie in ancient Persia, where the santur served as court and devotional accompaniment. The instrument reached Kashmir through Central Asian cultural exchange, becoming integral to Sufiana Mausiqi, the mystical music tradition of Kashmiri Islam. For centuries, santoor players accompanied Sufi poetry recitation and devotional gatherings, their shimmering strings providing textural support for spiritual expression.
The instrument remained regionally confined until Pandit Shivkumar Sharma undertook its classical transformation in the mid-20th century. Beginning public performance in 1955, Sharma spent decades refining techniques and instrument modifications to achieve raga-appropriate expression. His persistence established the santoor as a legitimate classical voice, earning recognition through the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1986), Padma Shri (1991), and Padma Vibhushan (2001).
The santur develops in Persia as a hammered dulcimer for court and devotional music. The instrument spreads through Central Asian trade routes to Kashmir and surrounding regions.
The santoor becomes central to Sufiana Mausiqi, the mystical music tradition of Kashmir. Players accompany Sufi poetry and devotional gatherings, developing regional playing styles.
Shivkumar Sharma begins studying santoor at age thirteen. He undertakes systematic modification of the instrument and development of classical playing techniques.
Sharma achieves international recognition through concert tours, recordings, and film compositions. The santoor gains acceptance as a classical instrument. Awards and disciples continue the tradition after Sharma's death in 2022.
The santoor features 25 bridges, each carrying four strings tuned in unison. This arrangement produces a rich, chorus-like quality as multiple strings sound simultaneously for each pitch.
Since struck strings cannot sustain or bend pitch, santoor players approximate meend through rapid alternating strokes between adjacent pitches. This creates the auditory illusion of continuous pitch movement essential to raga grammar.
Managing resonance is central to santoor technique. Players must constantly damp strings to prevent overlapping pitches from muddying the melodic line, requiring coordination between striking and muting hands.
