Tabla Solo | Durjay Bhaumik | Music of India | Kala Festival 2023
About This Video
Durjay Bhaumik performed a tabla solo at Music Without Boundaries, held at West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge on 17 August 2023 as part of Kala Festival. The solo opened with a peshkar, the opening genre of the Farukhabaad Gharana tradition, moving through measured, layered phrases that establish the rhythmic character before any fixed composition enters.
From the peshkar, Bhaumik moved into a series of kaydas, each a self-contained rhythmic composition developed through variations, keeping the original structure in sight while testing its range. The Farukhabaad tradition places weight on tonal clarity and the space between strokes; here that shows in the balance between the bass resonance of the bayan and the precision of the dayan, and in the way each variation returns to its base with control rather than display.
