On KalaSudha you can book concerts of Indian classical music and dance, learn any discipline online with a live teacher and listen to the recordings we make with our artists. You can also buy an instrument, practise with our free tanpura and look up a raga or a gharana.

The main menu opens Events, Artists, Gharanas and Instruments. The footer links Academy and KalaSudha Composer.

Book a concert

The events page lists our concerts of Indian classical music and dance in the UK and India. Filter by city, then press Book Tickets on a concert card. On an event page, press Book Now. You book and pay on kalasudha.com, and you can book as a guest.

Learn online with a live teacher

The KalaSudha Academy teaches every discipline of Indian classical music and dance in live one-to-one lessons with a vetted teacher. You book in your own time zone, and we record every lesson so you can play it back.

Our courses run in three taught levels. Foundation leads to the Sthayi Certificate, Intermediate to the Antara Diploma and Advanced to the Sanchari Advanced Diploma. From the Academy page you reach the course listing, the certificates page and the page on learning in your own language. We translate the course material into 22 languages besides English.

Prefer to learn in person? Our touring artists and Academy instructors lead workshops and summer camps, and one comes to an area when enough learners there register interest. To compare one-to-one and batch learning, read How learning works: one-to-one and batch.

Read about our artists

The artists page holds the profiles of the musicians and dancers we work with. A profile leads you on to that artist's concerts and recordings.

Look up a raga, a gharana or a dance form

Our reference pages explain the music. The ragas page leads to raga pages such as Yaman. A raga is the melodic framework a musician improvises within. The gharanas page covers the schools of Hindustani music and dance, each with its own style, handed down by teachers to their disciples. Discipline pages cover forms of music and dance such as Kathak.

Buy an instrument

The instruments page leads to guides to instruments such as the sitar: how each is built, how to care for it and where to begin. We sell instruments through the site, by quote or made to order, and deliver worldwide.

To ask about an instrument, press Request Quote on its page.

Listen and watch

Start with our guide to listening to Indian classical music. It sends you to the releases page for the albums and tracks we record in the studio and at our concerts. The videos page holds single pieces filmed on stage.

Practise with the free tanpura

A tanpura is a long-necked lute that plays a steady drone under a singer or instrumentalist. Our free tanpura plays one in your browser, with no account needed.

  1. Open the tanpura page and choose your Sa, the base note, under Tuning.
  2. Set the first string's note and the number of strings.
  3. Press Play.
  4. Set the volume and the jawari, the overtone-rich sound the strings make on the bridge.

It runs in a current version of Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox.

Save favourites and write notation

A free account lets you save artists and ragas as favourites. It also opens KalaSudha Composer, our notation editor for Hindustani classical music, which brings Bhatkhande notation to the browser and is open for testing. Read Do I need an account, and what do I get with one?

Work with KalaSudha

Presenters book our artists for festivals and venues anywhere in the world. Schools bring them in for workshops and concerts, and established teachers apply to teach in our Academy. Each of these starts on the services page.
