Vadi: Re (Komal Rishabh)
Samvadi: Dha (Shuddha Dhaivat)
A profound twilight raga of the Marwa Thaat. Defined by its unsettling Vadi of Komal Re (r) and the omission of Pancham (Pa), it captures the spirit of Tyaga (renunciation). Performable at sunset, it is known globally for its "Centrifugal" geometry that pushes away from the tonic, creating a restless, mystical atmosphere.

Origins & Context

As the day ends and the orange glow of sunset fades into grey, Raag Marwa takes centre stage. Belonging to the Marwa Thaat, this raga is a masterpiece of psychological tension. It is defined by what it lacks: it completely omits the Pancham (P) and treats the Shadja (S), the home note, as a point to be avoided.

In Marwa, the soul feels "homeless." By hovering incessantly on the Komal Re (r) and Shuddha Dha (D), the raga creates a sense of restless yearning and ascetic renunciation (Tyaga). It is not a raga of comfort, but of the raw, unvarnished truth of the passing moment. At KalaSudha, we view Marwa as the ultimate test of a musician's breath control and emotional maturity.

"

Marwa is the raga of the sun's last rays; it is beautiful, but it warns you that the light is leaving.

Swara Geometries

Core Form:
Centrifugal. The melody constantly pushes away from the tonic (Sa).
Reverse:
Inversion mirrors Raag Purvi (without the Pa).
Negative:
The shadow scale is dominated by the omitted P, creating a "grounded" contrast to Marwa’s "floating" nature.
Murchanas:
Dha-Murchana reveals Raag Bairagi.
Symmetries:
Uses a "Double-Diminished" tension; the gap between r and M# creates a haunting geometric void.

Global connections and equivalent scales

Raag Marwa is a masterclass in "Atonal Tension" within a classical framework. In world music history, it belongs to a rare category of scales that deliberately avoid the "home" note (tonic) to create psychological discomfort or spiritual yearning. It functions as a "Twilight Bridge," representing the instability of transition.

While most global scales seek resolution and "consonance," Marwa is one of the few that celebrate "Dissonance as Devotion," making it a favourite for avant-garde composers and seekers of the "otherworldly."

Western

Lydian b2 Mode

C - Db - E - F# - G - A - B

A "mystic" scale; Db and F# create extreme "tritone" tension.

Modern

Prometheus Scale

C - D - E - F# - A - Bb

Used by Scriabin; evokes "divine" or "otherworldly" anxiety.

Middle East

Makam Nikriz

C - Db - E - F# - G

A "fiery" scale is used for intense emotional transitions.
