Five Elements | Indian Slide Guitar, Piano, Sitar & Tabla | Music of India | Kala Festival 2023

At Kala Festival 2023, held on 23 August at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts in Maidenhead, Pandit Debasis Chakroborty performed a Five Elements set with Lovely Sharma on sitar, Deepak Shah on piano, and Durjay Bhaumik on tabla. The set structures five movements around the Pancha Bhuta: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Space, using Indian classical improvisation to give each element its own musical character.

The four instruments move through distinct registers and textures as the elements shift. The slide guitar's glissandi carry the liquidity of Water and the sweep of Wind; the sitar and piano trade melodic lines that ground the Earth section and ignite the Fire passage; the tabla holds and releases tension across all five movements, with Durjay Bhaumik's rhythmic shading marking each transition. At just under 30 minutes, the full set sustains a single arc from stillness to resolution.
