Raag Shree–Bada Khayal(Vilambit) | Tejaswini Vernekar | Vocal | Music of India | Purvi Festival 2023
About This Video
Tejaswini Digamber Vernekar performs the Bada Khayal in Vilambit laya, the second segment of a three-part Raag Shree suite at Purvi Festival 2023 in Motihari. The khayal follows the opening Alap and precedes the Tarana that closes the suite. A BHU Gold Medalist and All India Radio-graded vocalist, Vernekar brings the same patient raga grammar to the bandish that she established in the Alap.
The Bada Khayal form places a composed bandish at the centre, and the Vilambit tempo gives the singer room to develop Raag Shree's wide intervals at length. Shree's defining movement, the leap from Komal Rishabh to Pancham, demands both precision and weight; in the slow tempo, each phrase carrying that interval becomes a separate event. Vernekar works through the raga's vakra contour, dwelling on Komal Re before pushing to Pancham, letting the Teevra Madhyama sharpen the phrase before it resolves. The bandish holds the structure while the improvisation moves around it, building the raga's field of austere gravity across the thirty-minute performance.
