"The Complete Portrait of the Raga"
The Varnam is a compositional form serving both pedagogical and concert functions, comprehensively displaying a raga's grammar through demanding passages that test technical facility.
Quick Facts
Overview
The Varnam is a compositional form that serves both pedagogical and concert functions in Carnatic music. As a comprehensive display of a raga's grammar, the varnam tests technical facility through demanding passages that traverse the raga's entire range. In concert, the varnam typically opens the programme, warming the voice and establishing the performer's command before more elaborate presentations.
The word varnam means "description" or "colour," reflecting the form's function of fully portraying the raga's characteristics. A well-constructed varnam presents all essential phrases of its raga, creating a kind of melodic catalogue that demonstrates both the raga's identity and the performer's mastery.
"The varnam conceals nothing. It lays the entire raga before you, phrase by phrase, demanding complete command."
Two Types
Tana varnam is the primary type used in concerts and advanced training. Set in medium tempo (madhyama kala), tana varnams include solmization passages (muktayi swaras and chitta swaras) that extend the composition and increase its demands. The texts may be devotional, romantic, or descriptive.
Pada varnam developed for dance accompaniment, with texts expressing romantic themes in the nayika-nayaka (heroine-hero) tradition. These varnams serve as opening pieces in Bharatanatyam recitals, combining musical demands with dramatic expression. The tempo is typically slower than tana varnams to accommodate choreography.
Structural Elements
Varnams share the pallavi-anupallavi-charanam structure of kritis but include additional sections. Muktayi swaras follow the anupallavi, and chitta swaras follow each charanam. These solmization passages require precise intonation and rhythmic clarity, testing the performer's technical foundation.
The chitta swaras typically increase in complexity across the charanams, with later passages demanding faster speed or more intricate patterns. This progressive difficulty provides structured challenge during both training and performance.
Pedagogical Function
Varnam practice is central to Carnatic training. Students learn varnams in various ragas, using them to internalise raga grammar and develop technical facility. The demanding passages reveal weaknesses in technique while providing frameworks for improvement. Regular varnam practice builds the foundation for all other repertoire.
Teachers prescribe varnams according to student development, selecting pieces that address specific technical needs while expanding raga knowledge. The varnam's comprehensive nature ensures that mastering it implies understanding of the raga as a whole.
Concert Practice
Varnams traditionally open Carnatic concerts, establishing the performer's voice and demonstrating technical readiness. The varnam's demanding nature serves as warmup while its beauty satisfies as music. Some concerts feature extended varnam treatment with improvisation, though this remains less common than with kritis.

Historical Timeline
The varnam developed as a distinct form designed to comprehensively present raga characteristics. Composers including Pacchimiram Adiyappaiah, Patnam Subramania Iyer, and others created varnams that remain central to training and concert practice.
The pada varnam developed for Bharatanatyam accompaniment, with romantic texts suited to dance expression. Both types continue as essential elements of Carnatic musical life, serving pedagogical and performance functions.
Form Development
The varnam develops as a distinct compositional form. Composers create works designed to comprehensively display raga grammar.
Repertoire Establishment
Major varnam composers including Pacchimiram Adiyappaiah and Patnam Subramania Iyer create the core repertoire for training and concert.
Practice Standardisation
Varnam becomes established as concert opener and pedagogical essential. The form's dual function solidifies in Carnatic practice.
Contemporary Practice
Varnam maintains its central training role. Contemporary composers add new works while the classical repertoire remains foundational.
Playing Techniques
Two Types
Tana varnam is used for concert and advanced training, while pada varnam accompanies Bharatanatyam dance. Both comprehensively display their ragas.
Swara Sections
Muktayi swaras follow anupallavi, and chitta swaras follow each charanam. These solmization passages test technical precision and raga command.
Progressive Difficulty
Chitta swaras typically increase in complexity across charanams. This progressive difficulty structures both training and concert challenge.
