About Giuliano Modarelli
Giuliano Modarelli is an internationally acclaimed Italian guitarist and composer, celebrated for his distinctive blend of Indian classical, jazz, and contemporary world music. Based in London, he has developed a unique voice on the guitar, drawing deeply from Indian rhythmic and melodic traditions while maintaining the freedom and improvisational spirit of jazz. A long-time collaborator with some of the finest Indian classical artists, including Pandit Debasis Chakroborty, Shahbaz Hussain, RN Prakash, and Pandit Ajay Prasanna, Giuliano’s music bridges cultures with fluid virtuosity and emotional depth. He is also a founding member of the award-winning fusion ensemble Kaya and the Quest Ensemble. He continues to perform and teach across the globe, inspiring audiences with his cross-cultural artistry.
Born in Milan in 1977, he moved to England in 2000, where he attended Leeds College of Music. After receiving his Bachelor's in jazz music in 2003, he became a full-time musician. He started playing with bands like Sawa Teen, Raga Nova, and Nshwa, with which he performed at important festivals such as Bestival and the Moor Music Festival, as well as on BBC Radio.
In these years, he became interested in Indian music and began studying it with the Indian sitar master Dharambir Singh and the sarod maestros Buddhadev Dasgupta and Prattyush Bannerjee.
He is the founder of the fusion collective Samay and the award-winning ensemble Kefaya, with which he has been invited to participate in international festivals such as Womad, Latitude, London Jazz Festival, Darbar Festival, and Music Port Festival, as well as radio and television shows on BBC 1/2/3/6, Asian Network, and Doordarshan TV UK.
In 2008, with famous tabla player Bickram Ghosh, he composed music for Bollywood films Little Zizou and The Diamond Murders. In the same year, he toured India with Ghosh and percussionist Pete Lockett, supporting a musical performance called "East meets West," which led to his appearances on many Indian national TV programs.
His unique and innovative style has led to collaboration with internationally renowned artists such as Shankar Mahadevan, Bickram Ghosh and Pete Lockett, among many others.
